The birthplace of Victorian wine, this region is over 180 years old. While still nailing the traditional styles, It has evolved with the times and continues to attract some of the best and most innovative wine makers to produce some outstanding drops.
Its physical landscape ticks all boxes with mountains either side of the Yarra River. Due to the popularity of the region over its long tenure you will find high-end estates and properties, however it maintains a humbleness that charms rather than alienates.
The Yarra is arguably my favourite region in the country for its scenery, wine quality, convenience (an hour out of Melbourne) and its ‘extras’ - Four Pillars distillery, the Dairy and more!
Here is the list of the wineries I visited, in what order (logistically sensible of course!) and my own thoughts.
All Rounders:
- Yering Station
- Steels Gate
- Dominique Portet
For the Wine:
- Payten & Jones
- Punt Road
For the Cellar Door:
- Tarrawarra Estate
- Domaine Chandon
Cellar Door
A medium-sized, modern yet understated space. Enjoy your wines in a sun-lit room or venture onto the outdoor terrace to overlook the vineyard. There are also a few treats/sweets to purchase.
Wines
Focussed on traditional wines providing a full range of whites, reds and sparkling. All are well-balanced and have different vintages for certain drops (Pinot Noir).
Service
Owners Brad and Matthew provide fantastic personalised service, telling both their own story and that of the wines. You can taste at-bar or else take a seat.
Good For
Service, learning, story, wine appreciators, relaxed, lunch, small-medium groups, outdoor drink
Favourite Drops
Pinot Noir, Blanc de Blanc (Home Block), Cabernet Sauvignon
Steels Gate is genuinely balanced across the board. The stand-alone cellar door is medium in size and modern with large windows and an outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyard. It’s pretty and chic but not overstated.
In terms of wine their whites are fruity and flavoursome without being overpowering. They nail a classic Yarra Pinot while also delivering on the other end with their Cab Sauv. They stick with traditional wines, none of which I could fault.
The owners (Matthew and Brad) are often around for service and provide great backstory on their transforming from the previous Shantell winery into the own Steels Gate. They explain their wines in an informative way but keep it in layman's terms.
An excellent all rounder whether you are new to wine or an experienced campaigner.
Cellar Door
The Punt Road cellar door sits beneath grand old trees with branches that warmly embrace it. Inside is an intimate tasting room which leads out the back to rolling countryside complete with Bocce court.
Wines
Smooth and flavoursome, traditional wines while dipping the toe into a couple of less common drops.
Service
Informative not just about their wines but about wine in general. A home-grown accommodating warmth.
Good For
Service, learning, traditional varietals, small groups
Favourite Drops
Pinot Gris (both fermented and regular)
I enjoyed pulling into Punt Road's grounds - it was how I imagined pulling onto my grandparents' country property would feel (if they had one...) It is set amongst huge leafy trees with rolling countryside out back.
Inside is a small room allowing for focussed tastings and excellent service. We enjoyed talking with the staff who spoke about their products but also wine generally (best temperature for storage, their favourite wine fridges etc).
The wine range covers the Yarra's typical drops along with a couple more uncommon styles like the fermented Gris (pinker in colour).
Cellar Door
From the outside it’s like walking into a Fitzroy/Newtown bar, once inside you get the sense of an Art Gallery. Great spot out the back for an outdoor drink (granted I never tested it).
Wines
Delicate French-inspired wines with a boldness of flavour you’d expect from an Aussie winery. The wine labels are artistically drawn and add to the ‘gallery experience’.
Service
A quiet and intimate setting allows for excellent story-telling about the inspiration behind the wines, winery and labels.
Good For
Boutique, abstract, learning, story, relaxed, outdoor drink, French-inspired
Favourite Drops
Syrah
Payten & Jones have stamped their own unique style on their whole operation, from the wines, cellar door and even the artistically drawn wine labels.
We enjoyed visiting here in between our visit to the Four Pillars gin distillery. The cellar door is set on a commercial strip as opposed to huge grounds and has the essence of a bar from the outskirt. Walking inside had an art gallery vibe - it was calming and well styled.
Adding to this gallery feel was the sophisticated service from a 'wine artist'. The wines are delicate, made using French styles but keeping the bold Australian grape flavours.
While it was raining when we visited, there is apparently an excellent spot out the back for an outdoor drink and I am keen to revisit next time i'm in the area.
Cellar Door
Picture-perfect rustic brick and stone building with dark timber interiors which I can still smell. There is a second, larger contemporary building for lunch and room to roam.
Wines
Well-renowned wines that don’t disappoint. Bigger label whose reputation does not disappoint.
Service
A popular and busy Cellar Door so you may have to wait, however once served you get the full experience and ample attention. It's busy without being too crowded.
Good For
Wine appreciators, setting, lunch (apparently), groups big and small, exploring
Favourite Drops
Chardonnay
Yering to me blends together the best features in both big-name and boutique wineries.
It's an established winery, the rustic brick and stone cellar door is a testament to their experience in the industry. Inside has large floorboards and dark timber, so when you pick out and purchase your wines its like shopping at an old-school general store.
Despite its popularity, when we've been served on both occasions the crowds seemed to disappear. This is no small statement, I find crowds overwhelming and hard to ignore! The attitude of staff was still humble and happy to see new faces.
There is a more modern and contemporary building nearby to dine at and have functions. There are ample grounds which would keep any youngster entertained (i.e distracted while you drink). The wines are excellent, particularly their whites and it should certainly be on your list.
Cellar Door
The Door’s entrance is like a Hobbit House, taking you into a contemporary concrete bunker perfect for focussed wine drinking. The long driveway into the grounds takes you through hanging trees, open grassland and a picturesque pond, which can be viewed from the upper outdoor area next to the dining building.
Wines
Spanish and Italian-inspired wines along with Australian classics.
Service
Home-grown, passionate and well delivered. Intimate setting means intimate service.
Good For
Scenery, boutique, abstract, international styles, outdoor drink, lunch, quirky
Favourite Drops
Tempranillo, Nebiollo
There is so much I love about visiting Tarrawarra, so please excuse any rambling as I try paint a picture.
Through the entry gates you follow a path of tall trees up a driveway. The drive splits and opens up to a picturesque pond situated amongst a well-manicured lawn. All of this is set at the foot of an immaculately designed concrete building, slightly sloped like the drive you take to reach it.
Continue up the drive around the rear of this building and you can enter the modern building for dining. You can also sit on the outdoor 'treehouse deck' (its built around large trees) overlooking the grounds and the activity atop of the pond.
Or, you can about-turn and enter a hobbit-house door into a concrete, climate controlled bunker, shut off from the outside world and glad to be so.
The service is engaging, helpful and calming like the environment (how could you not be). The wines equally wonderful, on-brand with the rest of the experience. Miss it at your peril.
Cellar Door
A must-visit estate of great grandeur. The chic U-shaped service bar sits beneath an imposing ceiling, with floor-to-ceiling glass leading to an outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyard.
Wines
Sparkling wine specialists along with silky whites and soft reds.
Service
Professional, high-end.
Good For
Setting, photos, museum, overstated (in a good way), large groups, events, corporate, outdoor drink
Favourite Drops
Any sparkling, pinot gris
They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy nice things, and Domaine Chandon will kindly share their nice things with any visitor.
As one of the (if not the) premier vineyards in the Yarra, Domaine is once again set on a huge estate with no expense spared. Everything from the landscaping, the cellar door itself, the outlook, even the carpark has a sense of grandiosity.
The size of Domaine is its drawcard - I've been with just one other and also with a smaller group, yet have never felt out of place or uncomfortable despite other larger groups dominating the scene (Hens parties for example).
This is a must-visit. Some people don't like "mainstream" but Chandon maintain their sense of class and enthusiasm for their drops, service and overall experience.
Cellar Door
Encased amongst trees and hanging greenery along its walls, the earthy nature continues inside with wooden barrels in plain sight and a beautiful courtyard for an outdoor drink. A more understated version of Domaine
Wines
French-inspired, delicately made wines.
Service
Welcoming and informative story tellers. Authentic and knowledgeable. They create a friendly atmosphere thats conducive for conversing (with staff and other visitors alike!)
Good For
Setting, afternoon drink, groups, photos, outdoor drink, French-style
Favourite Drops
Rose, Pinot Gris
Come and take a trip to Bordeaux at this charming chateau-style cellar door, enveloped in vines and surrounded by natural greenery.
Like the cellar door, the wines are French-inspired and delicately made. It has an excellent outdoor area for the afternoon tippler and a warm, conversation-inducing interior (while I am sociable, talking with other visitors is fairly unique, so this stood out as a positive to the winery).
People associate wine with France and Dominique Portet fits that association without being at all stereotypical. It takes all the best things about French wine-making without losing its passport.
Moletos (lunch)
Perfect spot for an outdoor (or indoor) casual lunch, surrounded in a country setting. You’ll have a lot of fun exploring the grounds at this hive of buzzing activity and energy.
Yarra Valley Dairy
A must visit - enter a genuine farmhouse dairy and experience the best locally produced cheeses and chocolates. Plenty to try and then take home as gifts or for your own indulgence.
Four Pillars Distillery
Four Pillars are masters of their craft and true leaders in their market. Gin tasting is not for the faint hearted but the accompanying stories and the overall interior creates a fantastic experience for a visit to the Yarra. My favourite is the Chardonnay oak cask gin.
