Orange is relatively young in terms of its winemaking prowess - despite grapes being planted over one hundred years ago it was only from the 1980s that winegrowers realised the potential the region warrants.
There are now over 60 wineries producing cool-climate wines that aren’t scoffed at during dinner parties. The most common wines found are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, however many growers dabble outside of these drops to suit any wine drinker.
Outside of their wine, Orange has a well-regarded dining scene that capitalises on its fresh local produce. There are scenic walking/mountain biking trails to enjoy views and scenery from Mount Canobolas, or just enjoy strolling around the green and heritage-rich town.
The best way to explore the wineries is definitely by bicycle, although I recommend electric bicycles given the hilly topography of Orange.
Here is the list of the wineries I visited, in what order (logistically sensible of course!) and my own thoughts.
All Rounders:
- Rowlee
- Mortimers
- Ross Hill
- Colmar Estate
For the Wine:
- Dindima
- Montoro
- Bloodwood Wines
- Word of Mouth
For the Cellar Door:
- Pattina
- Heifer Station
- Phillip Shaw
By appointment only as you are welcomed into their sophisticated home and enjoy drinking wines with what feels like family.
While they provide a range of traditional whites, reds and sparkling, they also bring out their own blended styles such as the Chirac, Maurice and Schubert. All excellent and smooth.
You can never be disappointed by service when it is by appointment and inside the family home. A feeling of ‘coming home for Christmas’.

Cabernet Franc
As charmingly rustic and rugged as they come. Not the place for Insta-fame, you sit outside the shed on limited seating, right by the vines. It's a genuine farm feel - a raw experience.
Truly loved every drop, a great consistency with each style. They play with both oaked and un-oaked whites, provide the only Semillon in Orange, then have a variety of reds including a blend uncommon at Cellar Doors in the area.
As personal as it comes. We were greeted by an incredibly friendly Dave the vineyard chief who was entertaining some friends and guests, before being handed over to Lee, who embodies that motherly warmth and care to put you right at ease. Very knowledgeable over great conversation.

Rose, Cab-Sauv Merlot, Cab Sauv, Shiraz, Semillon-Chardonnay (Barrel Aged)
Has the feeling of a summer holiday house - open and airy, large deck and added kicker of hanging lights outside to create a real atmosphere.
Predominantly red wines along with a lovely Chardonnay. All were worth drinking.
As its a small Cellar Door you get that excellent ‘one-on-one’ service to talk you through each drop. The accompanying snacks to cleanse the palate are a great touch.

Pinot Noir
You get the great privilege of going to the owner's beautiful chateau. You walk down the side out the back to a courtyard by a mini waterfall, then laze beneath a cabana to try the wines. Don't forget a walk around the beautifully manicured"secret garden"
Pride themselves on their Chardonnay and also have excellent reds.
Given the limited numbers allowed for tasting, the service is highly personal, with the owner (Gerald) even coming out to talk to us about wines and everything else.

Cabernet Sauvignon (Jezza), Cabernet Mertot (white label)
Cannot stress the beauty of Gerald's perfectly manicured "secret garden", which is a winding path around the garden and house past water features. Get lost in it and enjoy after a few wines.
Mortimers uses the Old March Schoolhouse as their cellar door and uses it well. Inside is trendy and a hive of activity while outside has ample space to eat and drink in the sun and room for the party to continue be it dancing or even animal petting for kids.
Lovely cool climate wines best enjoyed over a cheese board.
While they are a very popular and busy winery, they are excellent hosts and offer that level of professionalism and passion while still staying grounded.

This is a small contemporary Cellar Door and only a few years old. It is sleek without being swanky - set on polished concrete flooring with black and gold colour schemes and a beautiful backdrop through huge windows that look out to the countryside.
Shiraz specialists - masters of their craft. Peppery, flavoursome, just excellent shiraz. Also have a Rose and a ‘White Shiraz’ which is phenomenal.
You’ll likely be greeted out front by Bailey the Cellar Door Dog (Collie). We then had Bob (owner) spinning excellent yarns about the winery, wines and everything else. Top drawer!

White Shiraz, Shiraz, Artisan Shiraz
Being greeted outside the front door by the Border Collie was a very nice touch.
A larger cellar door with the main attraction being the large outdoor seating area. It’s the perfect spot for a drink in the sun, but you can pop inside to view the barrels and get a better idea of the process.
The full flight of Australian wines here and all of them are worth trying. I particularly enjoyed the whites.
For such a large cellar door the service here was attentive and focussed. They even took us around the back where the barrels are to talk more about the process.

Blanc de Blancs
Cycling down the long pebbled driveway you are met with a charming light and bright Door overlooking tranquil vineyards.
French-inspired wines, all very delicate and had particularly enjoyable whites.
Thoroughly enjoyed the almost soothing service here, which involved well described glasses along with the origins of how the winery came to be.

Gewurztraminer
Nails the country barn atmosphere - you can do tastings inside a huge shed finished with beautiful wooden and cozy interiors, then take your glass outside to sit on hay bales and enjoy the fresh air.
The full range of Australian wines to suit any wine drinker.
You’ll typically do tastings in groups here and typically set around a barrel. The service is interactive and fun and makes for easy socialising.

Merlot, Pinot Gris
This is a very outdoor-focussed spot with so many choices of seating, be it tables on woodchip, swinging balcony chair or just a spot on the grass. Indoor is a very homely room to purchase wines and all else on sale!
Particular focus on white wines, also do a Pinot Noir and lovely chutneys, oils and candles.
They do the rounds and give a really descriptive background to what you are drinking. Another very tranquil and soothing experience.

Petit Mansang
A grandiose and impressive winery - set on large grounds with ample inside and outdoor setting with excellent outlooks. This is the most large-scale winery in Orange and is truly stunning.
They are a well-known spot with a reputation for quality wines, so enjoy a full array of traditional wines that give Orange a great name.
The servers will make their way around to you and take the time to talk through them. It is a busy winery so its not a spot where they will dawdle!

Shiraz
There are numerous areas set on different elevations including the cellar door area and a lower area for lawn games, then another level with pizza oven and other food.
